Income Tax Preparation Assistance

The Community Action Committee of Danbury, Inc. (CACD) is a VITA site. The program offers free tax help to low-to-moderate income people who are unable to prepare their own tax returns. Certified volunteers receive training to help prepare basic federal and state income tax returns.
Electronic federal and state income tax filing is offered; for married couples to file taxes electronically on a married filing joint return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms. Payment options are available for people who opt to file their returns electronically.
In order to have your income tax prepared by CACD's VITA program, certain documentation is needed in order for tax returns to be prepared. These items include:

  • Proof of identification
  • Social Security cards for the filer, the filer's spouse and dependents and/or a Social Security Number validation letter issued by the Social Security Administration
  • Dates of birth for the filer, the filer's spouse and dependents
  • Current year's tax package if one was received and wage and earning statements
  • Forms W-2, W-2G, 1099-R for all household workers from all employers
  •  Interest and dividend statements from banks and financial institutions (Form 1099)
  • Copies of the prior year's federal and state income tax returns if available
  • Bank routing numbers and account numbers for those seeking direct deposit
  • The total amount paid for a day care provider and the day care provider's tax identification number (the provider's Social Security Number or the provider's business Employer Identification Number).
